POOR QUALITY AND WEAK PROCESSES

The Chalta Hai approach proved to be a challenge. Considering I am a stickler for QUALITY, I made sure my local team honoured the commitments and followed the standards that my international team followed on a daily basis.

—Kanika Dewan, 33, Group President of Bahrain firm, Bramcoin. Kanika led the project to lay granite floors at T3 terminal of the world-class, award-winning international airport in Delhi, India Today, August 201082

There is a great need to drive and improve quality in India. There is a Chalta Hai culture in Indian society. It perhaps comes from the essential disposition of its people, who are, by nature, charming and very forgiving. However, to compete, especially in the global market, this needs to change. There is a need to move the QUALITY bar much higher.

—Paul Heath, O&M Asia Pacific, Business Outlook, August 2008

The Indian standards if compared to that of the international benchmarks, only give a clue that there cannot be any comparison as of now. Sanjeev Wadhwa, Country Manager, Fisher & Paykel India, explains it: ‘Indians believe in Jugaad and Chalta Hai attitude, which is why standards are in a very primitive stage’.
